The historical name of Gubbi is Amaragonda, this is one of the nine taluks in Tumkur district Karnataka state which belongs to the South India. It is also the place of the famous dramatist Nataka Rathna Gubbi Veeranna and Smt. Jayashree, the famous theatre artist. The Government first grade college is located in a convenient extension of the town, with 10 acres of land and the college campus is surrounded by good atmosphere for learning and teaching. Our College is the only recognized one for undergraduate and Post graduation centre in the taluk.

The Govt First Grade College, Gubbi was established in the year 1983, in the beginning it was affiliated to Bangalore University with a modest strength of 79 students and a simple structure at Govt girl’s high school Gubbi. Now this college is affiliated to Tumkur University.The college made rapid strides in terms of both in strength and structure.

The college has 11 departments including 3 departments of languages in total it offering 10 combinations. The college also offers 2 PG (MA-Economics and MA- English) courses from 2011-12. Most of the students of the college are from rural and socio-economically backward sections. The college feels that it is the moral obligation of the college to provide the best facilities and to make all efforts in developing the college as the centre for excellence. Hence the college in its journey towards excellence is approaching

DCE/UGC for assistance, since the college has all the potential to become a centre for excellence. So our move is towards getting autonomous status. The college has excellent teaching faculty consisting of 28 dedicated teachers among them 6 teachers are Ph.D. holders and most of them are actively pursuing research. All Science departments have well equipped labs and Computrer Lab and centralized Library facility which are developed over years.

The college has made a name for its commitment and hence the strength of the college is continuously increasing, which has reached 1774 during the academic year 2014-15. The result of both under graduate and post graduate courses is also good. The college has secured two ranks during the year 2013-14.

The college has emerged as a cultural centre, which organizes cultural activities regularly and has been publishing two wall magazines name “GUBBACHHI GUDU”

(A Nest of Sparrow) since 2008 and “AKSHARA”. The students are encouraged to write articles and poems in these magazines and their Reponses are commendable.

The college is moving towards achieving the overall development of students. Hence organizes many programs like personality development program- social skills and communication skills, training students for competitive examinations and others. The college has an active placement cell which not only organizes campus selections but also trains the students by organizing training programs. Post graduate students are trained for NET/KSET/ examinations to qualify them in for teaching in UG and PG. The institution is very well aware of the fact that the colleges are the foundations of higher education.
